Aung Min, President’s Office minister and the government’s chief negotiator at peace talks, has said that the signing of a ceasefire deal will not include all ethnic groups, and that only those ethnic armies approved by Naypyidaw will be invited to join the peace process.

Ethnic group leaders have agreed to hold a conference of armed ethnic groups following the agreement of a draft Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).

RANGOON — As government officials and ethnic armed groups moved closer to completing the seventh round of nationwide ceasefire talks on Monday, ethnic representatives and a government advisor said they in principle reached an agreement on the content of a ceasefire text.

Following one week of peace talks in Rangoon, a leading delegate of the ethnic bloc Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT), Salai Lian Hmung Sakhong, has confirmed to DVB that only four issues remain on the table for discussion when negotiations resume next week.

Ceasefire talks to resume on March 30

The 7th round of ceasefire talks will take a pause and will resume on March 30 because some points remain to be discussed.

The leaders of the ethnic armed groups and the government held a press conference on March 22 at the Myanmar Peace Centre in Yangon, after their talks, to say four points have still to be worked on.

RANGOON — The head of the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT), a coalition of 16 ethnic armed groups, said on Tuesday that if his delegation gets a “good compromise” with government negotiators this week, the group would agree to sign an elusive nationwide ceasefire accord.

Thein Sein meets with KIO in Naypyidaw

Burma’s President Thein Sein met with leaders of the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) in Naypyidaw on Monday. At the morning-time meeting at the president’s ranch, a three-point message was conveyed by the KIO, led by Maj-Gen Gun Maw, according to Hla Maung Shwe of the Myanmar Peace Centre.

The government’s Union Peacemaking Work Committee will meet with the ethnics’ Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) in mid-March for the seventh round of official talks on an elusive nationwide ceasefire agreement.
