Thein Sein meets with KIO in Naypyidaw

Burma’s President Thein Sein met with leaders of the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) in Naypyidaw on Monday. At the morning-time meeting at the president’s ranch, a three-point message was conveyed by the KIO, led by Maj-Gen Gun Maw, according to Hla Maung Shwe of the Myanmar Peace Centre.

We, the signatories to this Deed of Commitment for Peace and National Reconciliation, pledge, in order to achieve lasting peace in Myanmar, to work together towards realizing the goals envisioned in this Commitment in the spirit of responsible action, transparency and accountability.

Representatives of 12 ethnic armed groups held meetings with Burmese President Thein Sein and military Commander-in-Chief Snr-Gen Min Aung Hlaing on Monday to discuss a proposed ceasefire and prospects for peace.
